I can’t quite believe it’s been 2 years since I launched my little business! When I first set up my business it was just a hobby to (hopefully!) keep my baby brain occupied and give me something to focus on apart from the general day to day life of being a full time mum.
When I look back at where I’ve come I am so proud of my achievements. It’s by no means been an easy 2 years and it has taken A LOT of hard work, time and money to get this far and reach my goals. When I first set up my business it was all done in a bit of a rush…once I get an idea in my head I tend to jump in without thinking about it too much but I have learned that things take time and I’ve definitely become more patient and much better at planning my time and targets I hope to achieve.
This isn’t a bragging post by the way, I purely wanted to express that setting up a business isn’t an easy thing…you’re not suddenly going to be earning loads of money and attracting the right clients and being responsible for everything from your own products to your marketing, social media, accounting, PR, customer service (to name a few!) it really is a case of becoming a multi talented juggler of various jobs in one…not to mention being a full time mum too!
So what have I learned in my 2 years of business?
The main things I’ve learned since I started my business are charging what you’re worth, celebrate the wins, don’t compare yourself to others, outsource the things you’re not good at or don’t have the time for and learn to say no!
When I started I would take on any work, big or small. I wasn’t charging properly and in many cases, when I worked out the time spent and cost of materials I was actually making a loss on many of my orders! How embarrassing and stupid right?! But we sure do learn from our mistakes!
If something doesn’t feel right or I’m asked to work on a project that doesn’t fit with my branding or style, I simply turn the work down and recommend someone else who might be suitable (I would NEVER have done this when I first started!).
What has been my greatest achievement?
This HAS to be the fact that I have now won the award for Best Stationery of the year at The Wedding Industry Awards two years in a row for the 2018 and 2019 awards. I honestly still can’t believe this actually happened! To be recognised as a leader in the industry by the largest wedding awards in the country twice in my 2 years of business is just such an amazing feeling and the feedback my couples have given me has been so incredible. I put so much time, effort and love into all of my orders. From the initial consultations, to the design and even how I package up my orders for posting, it’s the little details that make all the difference. To have my clients really appreciate this and want to come back to me for future orders and recommend me to friends and family is so rewarding.
What’s next for White Olive Design Studio?
Well, apart from celebrating by stuffing my face with the incredible cookies and cinnamon doughnuts the lovely Dani of The Curated Kitchen has made for my 2nd birthday (the photos really do not do these beauties justice! They look and taste beyond amazing!), the next big thing for White Olive is to launch my new beginners calligraphy kits which will be going live on Monday 3rd December (eeek!) PLUS we will be welcoming our newest member to the family who’s due to make an appearance anytime in the next few weeks. So some much needed time out is definitely on the cards for this Christmas!
I will be returning to work in February and I’m so excited to have some lovely bookings already confirmed for the spring which I can’t wait to get started on! The next big project for the business is to have a brand new shiny website which the lovely Becky of Becky Lord Design is going to be working on for me. This has been something I’ve wanted for a while now and I can’t wait to see what Becky creates for me!
In the meantime, I’m going to get onto these delicious treats and raise a glass (ok so no bubbly for me but lemonade will do!) to toast 2 years of by business and here’s to many more years ahead!
Do you remember when getting post was something special? These days, our postboxes are mostly stuffed with bills and junk mail (and on a good day, a beautiful wedding invitation!). Sadly, the practice of sending Christmas cards has fallen out of fashion. Some people...read more
